I was seen at the sexual health clinic within the Fredrick street center for help in seeking an appropriate contraceptive option. Due to having a diagnosis of vulvodynia I experience anxiety around examination. However, the doctor who reviewed me initially to remove my implant and then further discussed my future options was extremely compassionate, non judgmental and informed about vulvodynia. This allowed me to easily advocate for myself which was positively received. For example, for the next appointment I knew she was going to see me and she pre arranged a longer appointment. This immediately eased my anxiety to allow myself to have an element of control when going forward with another form of contraception. Moreover, at the next appointment, on insertion of the contraceptive method I felt well supported and informed on each step she was taking, allowing me to control the way I felt and she was extremely empathetic on the way she treated me as an extremely anxious patient.
I just wanted to highlight how important these small but vital steps can be and how they can dramatically change a patients experience to make it so positive in a sensitive health care environment. I am very thankful to Dr Batalla.
If I had one other feedback to note it would be to suggest a more welcoming environment at reception. On my second appointment I was not acknowledged by the receptionist for around 5 minuets when standing in front of the desk. There was then no Hello/Welcome etc it was just to eventually shout out my name followed by time then told to sit. Due to the nature of this clinic and the varying number of reasons why one can present I thought this nature to be enough for another patient to return out the door or feel judged or as an inconvenience.
