"My Mum's care in a Residential Care Home"

About: Slieve Roe House

(as a relative),

My Mum was 97 years old when she passed away earlier this year.  She was a very independent lady who enjoyed her weekly outings until Covid struck, which impacted on her greatly.  She had lived independently, with support from family, friends and a care package, until she had a fall at the end of last year.

Mum was admitted to hospital and then eventually transferred, as a "stepdown" measure, to Slieve Roe House in Kilkeel, Co Down.  No visitors were permitted when she was hospitalised and with the transfer happening without me being there to offer her reassurance, this fell to Hylda, the Manager, and the staff at Slieve Roe House.  It was a difficult task as Mum, who also had difficulty hearing, had become very disorientated.  Every measure was taken, with such patience and understanding, to support and comfort her over the required period of Covid isolation.  She eventually became more accustomed to her change in circumstance which after assessment and discussions, due to her increased frailty, became permanent.

The care and support that Mum received daily went above and beyond what I expected.  Nothing was too great a chore for the staff and, as restrictions relaxed, Mum was able to get out in her wheelchair with the staff willingly taking her, many days on more than one occasion.  Mum was diagnosed with a terminal illness, and immediately I was contacted to arrange to be set up as her care partner.  I was grateful that, as a result of this and as restrictions eased, I was able to have the opportunity to take Mum out for short drives to her favourite places.

Right up until Mum took very ill, she (and they) enjoyed the good humour I noted was part of daily life in Slieve Roe House.  The care and attention Mum received there was extended to me, during her final days.  As I was Mum's sole remaining child, Hylda suggested a further caring partner be included for Mum, to help share the burden.  I appreciated this thought so much as, unexpectedly, Mum lingered for quite a time.

During this extremely difficult time, the staff took such good care of Mum.  She was never alone and all her needs were attended to.  She was treated as though she was awake and aware of all that was going on.  Her hair was tonged and a little makeup put on - this would have pleased Mum so much! I appreciated all that was done for Mum during that time - especially the little things.  They ensured a very difficult time was bearable.

There is a very warm and welcoming atmosphere in the home with nothing being too much trouble, if it is at all possible.  Mum's final months were spend in a professionally run, welcoming, caring and laughter filled environment.  More importantly, Mum was treated like she was part of a big, caring family!  I am so grateful that such well run and caring residential homes do exist.

Thank you so much for your kind words. We have found covid-19 a very challenging time within Slieve Roe and have found it difficult at times when residents are unable to see their families. I am glad having a second care partner helped to ease your burden in those last few days. We miss having your mum here in Slieve Roe, she had such a great personality and we really enjoyed having fun with her. A lady who is greatly missed. Take care.
