"Highbury hospital again"

About: Highbury Hospital / Rowan 1 Ward

(as a parent/guardian),

My son who was on one of the wards and then was moved after he was assaulted by another patient x2

He has greatly improved over the last 12 weeks he has been in hospital. Unfortunately on Sunday night he was assaulted again head butted on his mouth!!

We again were not informed of the incident by any one on duty at the time of the incident.

We actually learned about the incident from a social worker on Wednesday who rang his mother to talk about a care package so he can be discharged.. unfortunately SS cannot as yet can not  offer a package due to shortage of care workers ect ect ect ??? We are more than willing to help with the support package but he is ill and needs professional mental health and social care support too.

Surely his safety is of paramount priority!

So how comes he’s suffered 3 assaults over a period of 12 weeks.

It’s not acceptable that he has been in a safe place ??? and yet still been injured.

These patients are vulnerable and need observing. They all have various problems and are or can be volatile! Surely that’s what the staff are paid to do!!! Look out for any kind of tension on the wards and between the patients 🤔🤔😡

Dear Edwmg21

I am so sorry and disappointed to read about your son again and his safety on the ward after he was making such good progress. The continuation of this situation must be so worrying for you and your family so we appreciate your honesty here.

Can you confirm the ward where your son is now as you mentioned he was moved after the first incident? Highbury Hospital is split into different services and I would like to get in touch with the ward manager to let them know you have shared your feedback on Care Opinion.

Please be reassured that we do want to listen and it’s not acceptable for this to be happening again.

With my sincere apologies

Jane

Good morning

Mark was moved to Rowan one after the first 2 assaults.

The third happened on Rowan 1

Fortunately for him and us he has now been discharged into our care where he will be safe from any further assaults.

Hello Edwmg21,

Thank you for taking time to leave feedback.

I am really sorry to hear about yours and your son's experience on the in-patient wards at Highbury. We have spoken on the phone since this incident has happened and I have raised your concerns with the ward manager regarding the sharing of information with families (lack of) and how we safeguard patients on the ward, hopefully you knowing the ward manager will know that she has taken this very seriously and is addressing it with her team as this is not the care delivery we want for our patients or their loved ones.

I do know that your son has been discharged from Hospital after a much improved mental state and I hope he continues on his recovery!

More than happy to discuss this further if you think it will help, and can be reached on the below number.

Again sincere apologies

Many thanks, Steve

I dont feel there is any point really going through the same process as before! And yes I do agree that the wards are busy with vulnerable and volatile patients, unfortunately when my son was attacked again on Rowan it was so stressful for us all especially after he had been through so much trauma before being admitted to Highbury…

One staff was brilliant and apologised for the incident which happened when she was off shift.. It was the lack of responsibility on the ward shift managers to contact the family when it happened and not 3 days later… I am really disappointed by the way Highbury is getting so many bad reports due to the incompetence of the so called care staff…

Im truly hoping he will never have to be an in patient there again

Its all well and good saying that things are being put in place and that the wards will learn from this!! Unfortunately he has to live with this for the rest of his life… and so do we his family!

..

Hi Edwmg21,

I am really sorry that you do not feel that there is any point going through same processes as before and as reiterated previously I am really sorry that your son and yourself have had such a negative experience whilst he was a patient at Highbury hospital.

I want you to know that the care and safety of our patients is a top priority and we are constantly working with senior colleagues within the directorate and executive level to ensure that any concerns are heard and plans put in place to address these.

Please be assured that I will take your feedback to senior colleagues so that these deficits in care can be addressed and make positive changes!

With sincere apologies

Steve
