"My experience at ED was horrendous"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

I can only describe my time in ED as horrendous, chaotic and unorganized. I waited 15 hours with no bed or food. Staff only communicated with me twice, once  in triage and then again to do vital signs, I have never felt so ignored and abandoned. ED was extremely busy, rowdy and had a heavy police presence. There was limited seating and I couldn't even go to toilet as didn’t want to loose my seat and then have to stand as I was already exhausted.

I feels that patients under police escort should be segregated as ED is distressing enough without having to witness these war like scenes. I saw no protection for vulnerable patients against thugs, alcoholics or drug addicts.

I was admitted with Covid symptoms but did not feel comfortable discussing this with ED receptionist as no there is no privacy as area is open and in the middle of the waiting room, everyone can hear my conversation. ED waiting room was not ventilated nor was social distancing rules obeyed, I feels that Covid patients should have separate reception and waiting areas.

I  complained to staff and I was after 15 hours in the waiting room chair I was  given a trolley bed in ED. I spent  27 hours in ED (2pm – 5pm, the next day) before being given a bed in the ward.  Firstly I  was transferred to 2 south and again felt abandoned and left alone for lengths of time with staff 'popping in for 5 minutes' to complete vital signs or deliver meals. I had chest pains and headache so I requested pain relief but did not get medication for over 2 hours, I requested an ECG but was there was staff issues/shortages due to issues with masks. PI was  then transferred to 2 North and I am happy and content with staff in the ward and impressed that family are updated regularly.

Good afternoon,

I am sorry to hear of your recent experience.

With regards to long waits in the Emergency Department, our services have been under a lot of pressure recently and we do appreciate that this can be very difficult for our patients.

Patients brought to ED by the police service are assessed appropriately by senior staff. Any risks to safety to service users and service providers are always identified early.

Patients are screened on arrival for the symptoms of COVID-19 and face masks are given. We now have two waiting areas for respiratory and non respiratory patients. The triage nurse signposts the patient to the correct waiting area to help keep patients and staff safe

I wish you a speedy recovery.
