"Having my daughter"

About: Aberdeen Maternity Hospital / Obstetrics (Maternity care)

(as the patient),

I had my daughter through an elective c section in September. My care team throughout and after were absolutely fantastic. When my blood pressure dropped they acted quick and managed to get it enough to go up to a ward. It did take a further 9 hours to get it to a stable enough number but they did a lot to help. However, there is quite a few negatives to my stay which really let everyone down.

As great as the day staff were to me, it's when swap over happened. Had I not been paying attention I would have been given another dose of blood thinners which I had been given just 2 hours prior which meant my notes hadn't been read and that could have been dangerous had I not been paying attention. At 1am, the staff thought it was a good idea to clean the room and a bed space. At this time in the morning it's completely unacceptable to think this is a good time to clean when all mothers had been through a lot throughout the day birthing their babies. I made it aware I wasn't happy at all with the noise, waking the babies and disturbing the mothers who had just fallen asleep, with 3 members cleaning the bed not being very quiet. I was told this is a trial of cleaning beds in sleep hours to which I think is quite inappropriate and inconsiderate when everyone has had a hard day and want to sleep. The staff were very noisy as it was outside in the corridors which made it hard to sleep so when cleaners came to clean the room when I had just fallen asleep they didn't get a warm welcome from me, trying to blame my baby for keeping me awake when she was sound asleep.

The next day, new staff, we had a very lovely nurse who looked after us and catered to everything we needed and more. Her whole personality made it so much more pleasant.

Also beds were extremely uncomfortable. Having had a spinal block and with low blood pressure I couldn't move for over 16 hours meaning because I couldn't move much, I was extremely sore and uncomfortable when I eventually stood up. No matter how I changed my position or bed height etc it was still extremely painful. I was in a lot of pain and not ready to go home but because I was so tired and didn't want another night like the one before, I opted to go home where I could sleep, even turning down stronger medication even tho I needed it. My partner had a very hard uncomfortable chair which made visits quite uncomfortable for him.

Apart from the one member of staff and c section staff, post section  staff who were brilliant, i was extremely disappointed by my stay. I understand its not going to be hotel standards but be more considerate at night time and wait until non sleeping hours to clean the beds/ rooms.

Dear Ashleigh 1621,

Thank you for taking the time to get in touch and congratulations on the birth of your daughter, and I am delighted to know that you were treated well during her birth and the issues with your blood pressure recognised and acted on quickly.

While in the wards, please accept my apologies for the mistake with regard to the blood thinning injections. This is something that will be highlighted to the senior staff in the area to monitor.

The bed cleaning overnight was a trial, and your comments have been fed back to the domestic team, who will use them to shape how this service looks in the future.

With regard to the chairs and the beds, unfortunately the come as standard and we have very little room to change these due to infection control and moving and handling limitations, however when new equipment is procured the areas are often asked to give their opinion and I will certainly mention your comments.

I'm glad though that some part of your stay were brilliant.

May I wish you and your family all the best for the future.

Regards

Liz
