In April 2020 I broke my left wrist in two places, the ulna and radius. I rang 111 to see where I stood due to pandemic being rife and was advised to attend chesterfield royal hospital which I did.
On arrival I was checked in, had x-ray and the the breaks was confirmed, my wrist was then realigned under local anesthetic in top of wrist, then a partial cast as applied. I was then sent back to x-ray they then sent me home.
The pain was unbearable and I ended up back at hospital, no x-ray was given and full cast (plaster) was applied. They then set it and cut the cast for me to remove at home a month later. When my partner removed my cast on this date it was clear to see my wrist was misshapen. I telephoned fracture clinic explained about my wrist and was sent an appointment for six weeks later. That is where I attended clinic and my consultant looked at my wrist and realized that the appearance was not right.
So x-ray was given, to then be told the radius was not straight and surgery would be required. I ended up having surgery which required a bone graft from my pelvis to my wrist to close the gap after re brake of my left wrist this did take place in August 2021. This surgery ie bone graft may have been avoided if better care was given at the time of injury and pinned straight away, monitored more closely. This has caused a lot of stress put certain aspects of life on hold due to lack of ability in my wrist ie movement and flexion. I felt my care was disregarded due to the pandemic but at the same it was used as an excuse.
I appreciate it was tough for us all, but I need care like everyone else. I work as a support worker with vulnerable adults, I did return to work in October 2020 after being furloughed due to asthma. But because of my wrist not being right I returned on light duties only part time so I was reduce to six hours work a day instead of twelve hours so loss of earnings was incurred and again while I recover from the surgeries I have had. I will now only receive sick pay.
