"Ultrasound scan of pelvis for my daughter"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Radiology

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter is autistic and she had to have an ultrasound. She was told to come to the appointment with a full bladder. She was fine until half an hour before her appointment but then she was very uncomfortable and needed the toilet badly. My husband explained this to a lady on reception in altnagelvin hospital radiology reception, and she kindly told the radiographer who let her have the scan 20 minutes before her appointment time. The scan only took about 5 minutes and all was fine.

Hi Molly280,

Thank you for taking the time to share your positive feedback regarding the experience your daughter and yourself had while attending our Ultrasound Department last week.

Some, (not all), Ultrasound scans require the patient to attend with a full bladder. This is because when the bladder is full it acts as a “window”, and permits better visualization of the organs in the pelvis, such as ovaries, uterus, prostate etc. Without a full bladder the scan is limited.

While a full bladder is ideal for the scan, it can often be difficult and uncomfortable for patients to “hold on” once the bladder has filled, so it is important that staff try to accommodate, whenever possible. I am pleased that the staff’s teamwork on this occasion helped to minimize your daughter’s discomfort. I will share your feedback with the team.

Kind Regards,

Angela Elliott

Radiology Department Operations Manager
