"Great attention to detail and explanations"

About: Stepping Hill Hospital / Emergency Department Stockport NHS Foundation Trust

(as a service user),

Trying to be independent and I tackled a job I should have left for a carer. It was heavier and more awkward than I expected and I fell over and hurt my hip and shoulder on a concrete floor. I lay there helpless wondering what to do. Press my care call button which would probably result in an ambulance to hospital which I didn't really want. After struggling for a long time I rollled onto my  back, sat up and shuffled feet first an inch at a time about 20 yards to my chair where I could reach my phone. No-one at home so leave a message and try a new contact. She arrived about 10 minutes later at the same time as the couple I first tried. We discussed what to do and I felt I should really got to A& E - no ambulance available for 11 hours. My friends would take me if I could get into their car. I was in great pain and unable to stand on my left leg but it was worth a try. With extreme difficulty we managed. From then on my fortunes changed. I am elderly with mobility problems and limited movement from a shoulder injury. A& E was very helpful and I was soon dealt with, hip and shoulder x-rayed and kept overnight because I would be unable to cope alone at home. Throughout there was great attention to detail and explanations given. The staff in A& E and on the ward were very friendly and helpful and provided services of a physio and occupational therapist adn then discharged me into the care of the physios at a special home to get patients out of the hospital but still undergoing treatment until able to go home. The service was excellent. The only weak spot was the food, which has been my experience of this hospital over many years. It really does need improving.

Thank you for posting your feedback and it is good to see you had a positive experience at Stepping Hill. Attending A&E can be a daunting time so I am pleased that you received clear communication and support.

I will inform the teams about your comments as I know they appreciate receiving positive feedback.

I will also inform our catering department about you comments about the food. They appreciate hearing this feedback and continuously use these to improve the standard of food available.

I wish you well with your continued recovery.

Kind regards,

Aoife Isherwood.
