Phoned surgery but could not get past the receptionist. Went to Whitehills A&E - Fantastic, and told to see Dr. Couldn’t get past the receptionist again, back to A&E -  told to see Dr. I sat at the surgery till seen. Ended up at hospital for surgery. A lot of time and suffering could have been avoided if I had been seen by a nurse in the first place.

Many thanks for taking the time to share your experience on Care Opinion. We are always happy to hear about specific experiences and are keen to address them.

Thank you for the “Fantastic” response re your care at whitehills MIU and I am grateful for the opportunity to explain some of the reasons for your experience.

The Minor Injury unit is Nurse led and specifically treats recent minor injuries such as sprains, cuts, burns etc. Illness or on-going conditions that may require referral or specialist care would normally be seen at your GP practice. I sorry you had such difficulty accessing your GP but glad that you did eventually get appropriate care for your condition.

We have had recent discussion with practices regarding the type of referrals which are appropriate to be seen at the Minor Injury Unit, this will hopefully help to clarify matters.

Additionally, the service is undergoing a redesign by the Scottish Government to ensure that the patient is seen in the right place, at the right time, by the right person. If you need access to care and have a condition which is not life-threatening or an emergency, patients can contact 111 whereby the they will be assessed and then referred on to the right area to access treatment.
