"Felt left to my own devices"

About: Borders General Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics (Ward 9)

(as the patient),

I was an in patient on ward 9 nhs borders I just had had major surgery and was taken back to ward where I stayed for 2 days I ask for some pain relieve and was told they would be there shortly after waiting 40 minutes I buzzed  and waited another 40 with the buzzer continuosly ringing before the nurse arrived to see what I wanted I told her I ask for pain relief more than en hour and a half ago so she went and got me some and I had not had any baseline obs since I came back from theatre with aquiet a big blood lose which I think should have been done every hour for so long when you come back from theatre I am not complaining about staff at all but really think staffing numbers should really be looked at so patient safety and care Can be prioritised as I feel that the care I recived was poor as was left to your own devices  most of the time and as I am reasonable able to look after my self I feel elderly patient that needed help was not receving the care they needed

Dear Cuscf78

I am sorry to read that your experience in Ward 9 wasn't how you or we would expect it to be. Care after surgery including observations and good pain relief is essential. You didn't feel safe and I am sorry for that.

Due to many things, the effects of the pandemic on the entire workforce, staff isolating, vacancy rates and an increase again in patients who care in dedicated Covid wards the nursing, medical and support teams have been very stretched.

As you have described this has made it really difficult to provide the care that you require and that our staff want to deliver.

The difficult decision to pause Elective surgery, with some exceptions based on clinical decisions has been taken. This relieves some of the pressures you describe but creates more of a wait for those who need surgery.

I hope that you are recovering now. If you would like to discuss any aspect of your care in more detail please contact our Patient Experience Team on 01896 826000. One of the senior team from the hospital would also be happy to discuss this with you.
