After having blood tests following severe stomach and abdominal discomfort and concerns my local GP (who was excellent) undertook blood tests which led to findings that indicated a possible concern. Heightened pancreatic amylase was found, and with a family history of bowel and pancreatic cancer, the GP forwarded me to the ECDC.
I had a phone call to inform me of the decision, it was professional and personal and compassionate. This was mid July. The day after I was phoned by the ECDC and the reason and process for the referral was explained in a very caring and empathetic way. I felt at ease, even with the possibility of something sinister being behind the blood test results. A few days later I was called by the consultant who again put my mind at rest, explained the process and talked me though the results of the blood test, and explored my symptoms more fully.
He was engaged, listened appropriately and conveyed a sense of knowledge, care and authority on the subject discussed. I was told I would have a CT scan within two weeks. I asked if certain dates could be avoided due to a visit I had planned to see my daughter. By the Monday I was called by a very personable administrator and given a date for the beginning of August for the CT scan.
Arrival and parking at the hospital was easy, finding the radiology unit was simple, and staff in the hospital, even though masked, were attentive and supportive. The scan took a matter of minutes, the radiologist and attending support were lovely, and I felt at ease with the process and medication administered. After waiting for 10 minutes I was allowed home to await results. I felt OK, but of course had a slight concern that treatment plan may have been warranted.
Within 48 hours I had a call from a lady at the service who took me through my scan results and informed me that there was no evidence of cancer, however, there was sever inflammation as a result of diverticulitis. From start to finish the service was efficient, supportive and professional. I personally want to thank all involved for such. great service, especially with cancer being so prevalent these days. I have been told there will be a 3 month check up and another scan, and while this might reveal something more, I feel that early entry into cancer screening is invaluable. Thank you Fife NHS.
