"Prostate cancer"

About: The Lanarkshire Beatson

(as the patient),

Diagnosed in nov 2016 with prostate cancer, open surgery to remove it march 2017 could not be removed, had radio therapy April and May that year it worked. Jan 2018 cancer was back, was told doctor would have to discuss treatment that day that didnt happen 2 weeks later asked back to beatson was given prescription by nurse, told to get it from chemist go to my surgery make appointment with nurse start treatment, so I contacted prostate cancer uk they tell me I should have had discussion with doctor at beatson and had scan to see what stage my cancer was at first that didnt happen.

I eventually got appointment with doctor told him I was not happy about what had happened the doctor said no point in having scan now as it would not show anything as my treatment would have now shrunk the tumors now dont no what stage i am at, now being treated with depression dew to my treatment, was told last year dont worry if treatment stops working we have other treatment for you, didn't want to no it might stop working that has made me feel worse.

I collect my own treatment from chemist arrange for nurse every 12 wks at my health centre and blood tests, beatson phones you every six month speaks to you for six minutes & I feel they are only interested in psa results that's it.

Dear Wullie16,

Thank you for taking the time to provide this feedback. I was really sorry to read that there was a delay in discussing your treatment. I appreciate that this would have been a distressing time for you and I am sorry this delay added to that and that you are now being treated for depression due to your treatment and the communication regarding it. I am sad to read that you are unsure regarding the staging of your cancer and would advise that you contact your consultant’s secretary to arrange an appointment to help clarify this and answer any other questions you may have. Alternatively please contact me on 0141 301 7078 if I can assist you in anyway. Thank you again for getting in touch.

Kindest regards

Margaret Gray

Update posted by wullie16 (the patient)

hi I contacted Margaret, and got appointment with consultant, but the day my appointment I got a call from a nurse who phoned me regarding my issues but they couldn't answer them as there was no details of a scan when my cancer came back which they found odd. The only records on my grading was when first diagnosed was gleason score of six but nothing when cancer came back so the nurse could not tell me what stage I was at. So back to square one. The nurse informed said they would speak to consultant and call me back. Which they did the next day and said the consultant would do face to face on my next appointment but could not tell me what stage I was at and I cant stop treatment so not happy at that.

Thanks for listening

hi, seen doctor today he explained the reason for not getting scan, he said if we had waited couple months for scan, with my psa levels coming back at high level in a matter of months cancer would have spread and made matters worse and must stay on treatment, so my head is a bit settled now I've had the meeting.

thanks all for listening and all your help,

kind regards

wullie 16
