"I didn't feel as though I was being listened to"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / 4 South Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I began my experience in A&E yesterday and it wasn't too pleasant. The reception services were extremely daunting and I didn't feel as though I was being listened to at all. Sitting there and waiting such a long time whilst being in so much pain really wasn't a good feeling. Now don't get me wrong the nursing and medical staff were okay but that painful wait was horrific. When in A&E I personally had no fear in terms of covid but a lot of the people around me were sharing their anxious feelings about being there as they deemed it very dangerous. In terms of staff communication, as a whole it was okay but I would like to say I really didn't feel one bit informed as to what was currently going on as well as where I would end up treatment wise. Resources in A&E could be greatly improved. More privacy really would be needed down in A&E as I felt everyone was listening to everything around them and not only that but being able to observe other sick people around me was quite scary for me as a patient and their lack of treatment whilst waiting  as well as mine made me extremely frustrated.

After being moved up to 4 South in the early hours of this morning, I feel much more relieved and comfortable in my treatment. The staff have all been very generous, helpful and approachable. I'm now waiting for a scan to see if I need to have surgery and I'm hoping I don't have to wait too much longer.

Overall, I cannot fault any of the medical or nursing staff, its more higher up roles which need sorted, these issues are not the fault of the staff but instead are issues within the system.

We apologise you felt you weren't listened to, The department has been under immense pressure these last few weeks, there has been a significant number of patients waiting in ED on admission beds. this leads to overcrowding and reduced capacity in ED to see patients in a more timely manner. The Trust is working hard to address these issues. Unfortunately the emergency department is an old building, we continue to work with our colleagues in planning and estates to enhance the facilities. We have embarked on a programme of building improvements in relation to improving our existing patient accomodation. We hope you are healing well.
