"Good care but long waits"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department Craigavon Area Hospital / Orthopaedics Northern Ireland Ambulance Service / Emergency ambulance response

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

In terms of my own injury I am shocked at how little time it took me to do so much damage. Although from admission the staff have been tremendous and they aren't praised enough. My injury is a broken ankle which I got through falling at home. Frustratingly I had a 4 hour wait on the ambulance service to get to me which meant I had to lie on the floor in extreme pain for such a long time. I think the undertstaffing of the ambulance service is outrageous and needs to be sorted. The 2 ambulance staff on where the only 2 ambulance crew covering my area that day and they were never off their feet. When they arrived they were so apologetic about my wait and I found it completely understandable as it's not them who are failing to provide the appropriate care, it's the system. They couldn't do enough for me and made me feel reassured and comfortable on my way to hospital. I am very happy with this service.

They brought me into A&E where I had to wait a ridiculously long time to be seen. The place was packed and the lack of space made me frustrated, it was unbearable. When I eventually got an x-Ray the staff were so lovely, kind and helpful.   I have currently been in a week and am waiting for my swelling to go down before I can get operated on which is a bit of a disaster but that's my body's fault.

At the minute I am in a lot of pain but the staff are doing their best for me. To be honest some explanation may be lacking in terms of my treatment as I would like to know a bit more about exactly what's going on with my treatment and care as well as what the future may look like for me. Finally I am very glad to have a room on my own which is bright and airy and I enjoy looking out onto the greenery, spending so long lying up unable to move I do get very bored so I am glad I can see out.

Dear Keeen88

I totally understand your frustration and apologise for any added pain and discomfort caused during the protracted wait for an ambulance after your fall.

We are tirelessly trying to address all the issues that you have highlighted.

Hopefully the swelling reduces soon so you can undergo the surgery you need to aid a full recovery.

Kind regards

Amanda

Thank you for your kind words in relation to our staff. We apologise you had to wait a long time in the emergency department for assessment and x-ray imaging, the emergency department has been incredibly busy we have also had a significasnt amount of patients waiting on trolleys for inpatient beds this has contributed to long waiting times and we hope you are recovering well.
