"A big screen would be better for communicating"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I came to the emergency department at 10am this morning and waited in reception. I can see that everyone is doing their best during the busy periods and I do think they need more staff on so others arent as stressed. I came here with my daughter and without her I think I would have found it difficult to know if they were calling my name.

I think if a name was written up on a big screen or you were given a buzzer it would be better for communicating. Especially for more elderly patients who are hard of hearing. I also do not have a phone so I couldnt contact my daughter who was in reception to tell her I was ok or to explain what was going on. However the care opinion girls went and found my daughter and told her a message, so this was nice.

Good afternoon

Thank you for acknowledging the staff in the emergency department are doing their best. We continually recruit and try to retain our staff in the specialty. Can we reassure you the staff in triage will call patients by their name, if no one responds the staff will go into the waiting area to find that patient. We do have an information screen but are conscious people waiting in the main foyer would not be able to see it. We would have on occasions have over 50 people in the waiting area so providing a buzzer for all might not be possible. Clerical staff however do advise the triage nurse if someone has hearing problems so the nurse will go into the waiting area at the outset.

We hope you are recovering well.

Regards

Paul Smyth
