"Breastfeeding"

About: Fife Community Services / Breast Feeding Support Service Fife Community Services / Health Visiting Maternity care / Antenatal and Postnatal (Ward 38) Maternity care / Community Midwifery Unit Ninewells Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

Due to a tough time giving birth ( blood loss , severe tear and gettting antibiotics) I was delayed in starting breastfeeding and my body was trying to recover.

The hospital staff although helping me to breastfeed also offered to feed my baby formula during the night so I could sleep. I gratefully accepted but didn't realise what an  impact that would have on my supply. I wish they had explained that it might stop milk flow or had more knowledge about it as I wouldn't have given in despite being so tired.

Once back home I was sore and healing and found breastfeeding very hard going. It was sore and neverending. As it turned out my baby regained his birth weight fine initially but it was the following weeks and months later that he deviated from the average weight. I was determined to solely breastfeed and was introduced to the breastfeeding team from fife.  They provided me with a double  expressing machine to use up to 5 times a day to encourage milk production and also came out to help.

After weeks of persisting however my milk production still seemed low and baby wasn't gaining enough weight, and with advice from my healthvisitor  and breastfeeding team we decided to give a bit of formula. Within weeks he was gaining and obviously just needed some calories. He was much happier too and clearly not so hungry.

The breastfeeding team were available on the phone all the time and helped me with a wee routine to stick to which would not interfere with my milk production. Over the next month the changes were amazing and he grew considerably. We are very grateful for the advice and help in those scary first few months.

Dear Sambam, thank you so much for taking time to provide some feedback on your experiences of care in your breastfeeding journey.

Those early days can be really hard and there are often things going on that can make getting breastfeeding off to a good start challenging. It is great to hear what a success you have made of your breastfeeding journey and that your wee one is thriving. I am please we were able to provide you with some support along the way.

Thank you in particular for reflecting on the choices you made at the beginning and the impact the unintended consensequences can have beyond the early days. I'm sure we can learn from this so that future mothers can be supported to make more informed decisions about giving formula supplements.

My best wishes to you both.

Sambam

Thank you for taking the time to send us your feedback and congratulations on the birth of your baby.

I am so sorry that you were not provided with all the information you should have been given to help you make informed choices for yourself and your baby. I would expect that from our midwifery team and we can certainly learn from your feedback and improve how we support new mums in the early days.

It sounds like the care once you got home from the breastfeeding team was supportive and I am happy to hear that you were supported in your feeding journey.

Best wishes to you and your baby
