"Autism-unfriendly waiting area"

About: Market Harborough Med. Ctr

Even though I live in Market Harborough, I prefer to travel to the Husbands Bosworth surgery because the waiting area at MH is so unfriendly. I'm autistic and it's a truly horrible place for me to visit. The lighting, the people, the noise, the textures, the layout, the design, the processing system: everything is unpleasant from an autistic point of view. And the buzzer that tells you when to go to your appointment is particularly horrid.

I expect the medical treatment is fine, but when I visited for my COVID vaccination I had to be accompanied to get through it. I wore noise-cancelling headphones and sunglasses, and it was still difficult. It wouldn't take much to make the place more autism-friendly, but I guess that's just not important enough.

Sorry to read about your experiences: we could have offered your vaccination in the car or outside as appropriate which we would be happy to do in future and have done for many others who do not find it easy to navigate the medical centre environment.

We would be happy to have any ideas as to how to improve things but need to be mindful of those patients who have poor visual acuity who need the light to be able to navigate the environment and those hard of hearing who benefit from the call board bleep, although I would agree its not a pleasant tone and we will be in touch with the suppliers to see if it would be possible to at least change it.

Kind Regards
