"Why were we continuously sent away"

About: NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service) University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

After my daughter having a cold for over a week she woke up with a temp of 42 wouldn't eat or take fluids and was grunting when breathing. I did a covid test on both me and her father and also herself which came back negative and I contacted nhs 24.

A paramedic was sent and I was informed at this point I had to take my daughter to wishaw as the wait for an ambulance was over an hour. On arrival I was places in the covid waiting room which I didn't find acceptable my daughter was already unwell and was then placed in a room with suspected covid patients who were pulling their masks down. To make matters worse there were other patients acting aggressive in their speech.

I told the reception of my concerns mainly being she was already unwell and I was concerned she would then contract covid but they refused to move me so concerned I left with my daughter and monitored her overnight providing calpol and nurofen for her temp and giving her fluids through a syringe.

On the Friday morning she was getting worse so I again phoned NHS 24 and this time they sent an emergency ambulance which took us to wishaw. I was seen by a doctor and advised her heart rate was up and also her blood sugars were low, this was down to her temp and also not eating. After all checks were complete we were again sent home and told to push fluids through syringe and monitor temp with calpol and nurofen.

I did this but again on Saturday she woke up worse I again phoned NHS 24 who sent an emergency ambulance and this time after all check were complete they informed me she had an ear infection and also ketones in her urine due to not eating. this time we were sent home with an antibiotic and told to push fluids through the syringe. We did as we were told but she continued to deteriorate but I thought I have to give the antibiotic a chance to work.

She has an ear infection but by Tuesday she was still not drinking or eating grunting when breathing, temp was high and was just continiously sleeping I called for advice and was informed the covid team would phone me back. After an hour and a half we still hadn't heard anything so decided to take my daughter into the QEUH for help which I am so glad we did. It turns out my daughter had pneumonia and also fluid in the lung the infection was so bad that we had 8 days in hospital which she had to endure iv antibiotics every 6 hours with fluids inbetween.

I am so thankful for the QEUH but don't understand why Wishaw refused me a pediatrician, would not complete blood tests on my daughter and could not hear her lung was silent when listening to her chest. Why were we continiously sent away. My daughter now needs to continue as an out patient and this may have not been the case if we had just received the correct help when we needed it.

Hi Nicoletoner

Thanks for sharing your experience on Care Opinion. I'm so sorry to learn your daughter was diagnosed with pneumonia and fluid in the lung and required to be admitted to hospital. It sounds as though this has been a hugely worrying time. I sincerely hope she is doing much better and that you all take time to recover.

I understand your story mainly relates to NHS Lanarkshire, however I did notice that you had a number of contacts with NHS 24 when seeking help for your daughter. If you have any feedback for us directly, then I would be pleased to hear from you. You can contact me at Patient.Experience@nhs24.scot.nhs.uk or by phone on 07814 299944.

I am pleased to learn your daughter is now home with you and I wish you all well.

With best wishes

Shona
