"No help at all for diabetic patient "

About: Poole Hospital

My husband attended the A&E today (Sunday) as he has an abscess in his mouth. After being shoved from pillar to post, he was told that they will not help him as his mouth is not swollen enough!!! He must call 111. All he needed was a course of antibiotics to clear the infection and then a dentist will remove the tooth WHEN we can get an appointment.

He is a type 1 diabetic and having a mouth ulcer / abscess and an infection causes havoc with his blood sugar levels which is not good for any diabetic as any nurse / doctor would know!

Rude service from beginning to end.

Dear Michelle

Thank you for taking the time to the share the experience you and your husband had during a recent visit to the Emergency Department at Poole and we are sorry to hear that on this occasion you left feeling dissatisfied with the service.

We passed your comments on to the department manager who has reviewed your comments and while he apologised for the way you felt treated during your visit he reiterated that the advice given to contact 111 and seek emergency dental care was the most appropriate at that time.

We apologise if access to emergency dental care was not explained fully to you on this occasion but hope your husband was able to be seen by a dentist and is now feeling much better.

If you would like to discuss your experience in more detail please could I encourage you to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 0300 019 8499 or via email at patientexperienceteam@uhd.nhs.uk

Regards

Patient Experience Team
