"Language in pregnancy"

About: St Thomas' Hospital / Maternity care

(as a friend),

One of my friends who is thirty years old had her twelve week scan recently at St Thomas’ Hospital. She was advised by the sonographer about the “risks” of having a baby with a chromosomal difference due to her age.

Parents and carers with a family member with Down’s syndrome  and other chromosomal differences (including myself) have worked and campaigned hard to change the language and I was really surprised that this language was being used in a renowned and leading teaching hospital such as St Thomas’.

Down Syndrome Research Foundation UK have free resources available on their website about language awareness. Please have a look at them and it would be wonderful if you could attach the poster in relevant areas of the hospital in order to educate your staff as well as all those involved in the care of people with any of these disabilities.

Thank you
