Came in to the ED at the weekend. With two exceptions a very positive experience and wonderful service from great staff.
The minor one was when staff wanted an itemised property list and were insistent only they could go through my bag. They wouldn’t tell me or let me see the items. I understand the reason why; what I don’t get is why it’s not taken to a logical conclusion and the patient/representative doesn’t sign it agreeing it’s accurate and extent of hospital liability for loss/damage etc. Also, surely in this age of technology this info could be recorded digitally & added to the patients electronic care record?
What really took the shine off was the apparent inability of a Registered Nurse in an ED to do a cannulation. Maybe for personal reasons eg upsetting personal issue/news or a recent unpleasant event. Hopefully though not lack of skill. Whatever the reason they may need support of some kind.
Not medically qualified but if after 5 goes and patient is crying with pain why would any HCP insist it was nearly done, repeat a few times more before moving on and doing exactly the same thing on a different blood vessel?
It’s hard to say no when surrounded by 3 staff, assured it was nearly over whilst my arm is in a death grip. I know my veins can be difficult & with ASD associated sensory sensitivities complicating my Raynaud’s so at the time blamed myself. I should have been more insistent another area was used. I didn’t feel I could say no either nor that this particular nurse would listen or give weight to anything I said.
Never had a qualified HCP make such a mess of what should be a basic clinical procedure.
It was unbearably painful the entire time in the ED; couldn’t bear it being touched or moved. I can’t use my right hand without severe pain at the moment, & it’s testament to how far it didn’t go as expected that the bruising extends from mid forearm to base of fingers around the whole arm.
"Qualified success"
