"Depression"

About: Inclusion Thurrock (Talking Therapies)

(as the patient),

I was literally about to attempt suicide as I could see no way out of the situation I was in but then I thought about my daughters who had already lost a parent to cancer several years before so I went to my GP for help. He was fantastic and got me in touch with inclusion Thurrock and I haven’t regretted a day since that I did not make that choice! I now know I am more than my problems and definitely more than my feelings! I am in control! I now know what to look for regarding triggers, I know I have to talk to my family about how I am feeling and most importantly I now know when someone asks how I am, it’s alright for me to actually tell them rather than say “yeah all good thanks”

Dear Survivor1961,

Thank you for sharing your very personal experience with low mood and using our service. I'm so sorry to hear that you had reached a very difficult point and had been thinking a lot about ending your own life. These experiences are very isolating and we often think that others may not understand how we are feeling, or might find it difficult to speak about beyond saying 'yeah all good thanks' as you have mentioned there. It was a really positive step for you to get in touch with services at this point and we are so glad you did.

It sounds like you have learned a lot through your work with us, certainly that you are able to separate the way we feel from the way we are, which is so important. When we're having negative thoughts, or feeling low, our first response is often to act the way we feel, to follow these thoughts, even if they may lead us somewhere that isn't helpful. One of the main things we cover across many different types of therapy is how we can respond differently, to not be so guided by the difficulties we are experiencing currently and to make changes to support ourselves to improve wellbeing.

It's wonderful to hear the ways in which learning these things have changed things for you, whether it is about managing these difficulties or being able to speak about them more comfortably with others, it sounds like there have been some real improvements for you. I wish you all the best in maintaining these for the future!

Kind regards,

Adam
