I broke my wrist a fortnight ago and on review this week the fracture had displaced meaning that I needed surgery to fix it. I was really worried about this because I have a 6 month old exclusively breastfed baby who I had not left for longer than a couple of hours before then.
Mr Torkington, the orthopaedic surgeon, was very accommodating and arranged my admission and discussed the potential need for my baby to come to ward 4a Gartnavel for feeding with the staff. Dr Hickey, the anaesthetist, knew about my circumstances and used a local anaesthetic block which meant that I had brilliant pain relief with no impact on the need to feed my son. It also ensured that I got home again quickly. He phoned me today to check that the effects of the block had resolved.
I was involved in the decisions around my surgery and anaesthetic at every stage and felt the benefit of my management being tailored to my slightly unusual situation. The team in 4a and theatres were lovely and really put me at ease. At no point was it suggested that I should stop breastfeeding for a period of time (continuing breastfeeding was very important to me) or that it was inconvenient to have my baby in the ward to feed.
I would like to thank Mr Torkington, Dr Hickey and the medical and nursing teams for the excellent and individualised care I received.
"Excellent care of my wrist fracture"
