"Excellent care of my wrist fracture"

About: Gartnavel General Hospital / General Surgery (ward 4a) Gartnavel General Hospital / Orthopaedics (ward 4c)

(as a service user),

I broke my wrist a fortnight ago  and on review this week the fracture had displaced meaning that I needed surgery to fix it. I was really worried about this because I have a 6 month old exclusively breastfed baby who I had not left for longer than a couple of hours before then.

Mr Torkington, the orthopaedic surgeon, was very accommodating and arranged my admission and discussed the potential need for my baby to come to ward 4a Gartnavel for feeding with the staff. Dr Hickey, the anaesthetist, knew about my circumstances and used a local anaesthetic block which meant that I had brilliant pain relief with no impact on the need to feed my son. It also ensured that I got home again quickly. He phoned me today to check that the effects of the block had resolved.

I was involved in the decisions around my surgery and anaesthetic at every stage and felt the benefit of my management being tailored to my slightly unusual situation. The team in 4a and theatres were lovely and really put me at ease. At no point was it suggested that I should stop breastfeeding for a period of time (continuing breastfeeding was very important to me) or that it was inconvenient to have my baby in the ward to feed.

I would like to thank Mr Torkington, Dr Hickey and the medical and nursing teams for the excellent and individualised care I received.

Dear Aileenh

Thank you for taking the time to leave such lovely feedback in regards to your experience of using the General Surgery and Orthopaedics Departments of Gartnavel General Hospital.

I understand how stressful it must have been to leave your baby boy at home while you had your surgery so it was refreshing to hear how the staff communicated with you throughout to help put your mind at ease.

It was also great to hear how you were kept involved in discussions around your surgery and anaesthetic and how all the staff were accommodating of your situation around your baby's feeding needs.

I will be sure to pass on your comments to Mr Torkington, Dr Hickey and the medical and nursing teams who I'm sure will be delighted to hear how they made a difference while you were under their care.

Please take care and I hope your recovering well after your surgery

Kind regards

Kevin
