"My hospital admission"

About: Lincoln County Hospital / Cardiology Lincoln County Hospital / Medical emergency assessment unit (MEAU) Lincoln County Hospital / X-ray and Scans

(as the patient),

I was admitted into hospital after passing out at home 3 times. Whilst in hospital the nurses etc were lovely.

The complaint I have is that for 5 days I was on the MEAU wards. I saw numerous doctors and none could find any reason for this. I was told there were scans, MRI etc booked to try to get to the bottom of this, but despite me telling them that I thought it was due to the extreme pain in my right knee and too many pain killers, I was not listened to.

I was on the wrong heart monitor which caused an extra 48 hour delay. I was eventually moved up to the short stay cardiac ward where I found out 16 beds had been empty for the whole of the time I was in MEAU. I also found out that ALL the scans, xrays etc I was told had been booked hadn't been or had been cancelled. No one seemed to know what was going on least of all the doctors. I was then left on my own in a room for 4 days, then had a cardiac loop fitted, again forgotten about and it was only when the doctor said I could leave that they realised that it hadn't been activated.

Also the neurologist, who was great, showed up and whilst they said they couldn't find anything wrong, still wants an MRI on my head which was meant to be done whilst in hospital but was cancelled... again. I am still awaiting a tilt table appointment. Also in my discharge papers it states I was unconscious for 30 minutes on my last collapse!!! I wasn't as my wife was there and she stated that all collapses were no more than seconds not minutes, she dealt with it and as she is a first aider she would have known that. Also it says I have migraines, I've never had one in my life. We both feel this had been very badly mismanaged, not only with the uneccessary bed-blocking but also the unnecessary treatments. Being unable to drive for 1 month is having a negative effect on my work and if it goes on much longer, in my line of work, I risk being made unemployed due to health issues.

Dear SDSP

I am the Sister on Cardiac Short Stay. I am sorry your recent stay had a negative impact on your quality of life, this is not what we would expect from a stay with ourselves. I am unsure who informed you, in regards to the bed occupancy on CSSU, however, can I assure you that I have never been fortunate to have 16 empty beds, and that we would have brought you to a cardiology bed as soon as clinically able.

Please accept my apologise, for being left alone in a side room. I will take this back to my nursing team, as I believe that all patient should have a positive experience. Staff interaction should be paramount in your daily care.

In regards to your discharge document if you have identified errors within, I suggest that this needs to be addressed by your discharge team. Unfortunately, I do not have your details to enable me to review your documentation, and where possible address some of your questions and concerns. If you would like me to help in anyway, please forward you details to the Patients Experience Team and they will forward it to myself.

Dear SDSP

I am the radiology operational manager for United Lincolnshire Hospitals, if you were able to e-mail me paul.clark@ulh.nhs.uk with your name, DOB then I’d be more than happy to look into this in detail and feedback directly to you. As you can imagine we provide so many MRI scans each day it is extremely difficult to highlight your imaging request without your specific details.

Our inpatient MRI service in under significant pressure at the moment which affects our responsiveness to scanning appointments. However all of our inpatients would have their scan completed within 12-72 hours of the request dependant on the clinical urgency of the scan etc.

Please feel free to contact me so that I can look into the specifics with yourself confidentially.

Kind Regards

Paul Clark
