"Pregnancy"

About: Perth Royal Infirmary / Community Midwifery Unit

(as a service user),

My allocated midwife went off on long term leave. I was advised that they would try to have another midwife see me consistently but this never happened. Rather than being re-allocated I saw a different midwife each time. I had to chase up some appointments rather than a midwife arranging them routinely. I felt I had to re-tell everything each time. I felt that things were missed and/ or never followed up such as bad pelvic pain being put down to baby sitting on a nerve. This meant that I remained in significant pain and didn’t get the help I needed.

I felt like an inconvenience rather than cared for as it was often left to last minute as to which midwife would see me. I wasn’t able to build up a rapport. I had complications (too much fluid and breech baby) and was left feeling quite anxious and this contributed to me having a very negative view of my pregnancy experience. The individual midwives themselves were pleasant but I felt they didn’t have time to read up on my notes or give me time as I was an “extra” to them that day. Information on my notes was incomplete as they didn’t get around to inputting it on the system.

Thank you for your feedback. I am so sorry that this has been your experience during your pregnancy and would welcome the opportunity to discuss this with you further and ensure you receive the care and support you need going forward.

It would also be helpful to be able to review exactly how and why you were not allocated a replacement named midwife as this should have happened.

We have worked hard to put continuity of midwifery carer at the centre of our maternity care provision in order to avoid the very issues you have identified. Your midwifery care should have provided you with the support and reassurance you needed and again I am sorry this did not happen for you.
