"Next thing I am in a CT scanner and up to the stroke unit"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Stroke Care Scottish Air Ambulance Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as the patient),

I had my second kayak lesson where I lost control due to wind, going under 3 times and struggling to breathe, floating on the water and feeling so tired. Next thing I remember is the instructor sent out a mayday distress call and signal poor I must have blanked out again and wakened up with my GP shouting my name in an ambulance, then nothing again then Air ambulance medical team shouting my name. Then  wakened up in A&E with my daughter & son and struggling to breathe.  Staff were excellent and I was told I was going to Green ITU.  Doing ok, then on Wednesday evening feeling my right arm heavy, pain at the back of my neck, speaking to staff nurse saying I dont feel well.  Speaking rubbish and aware of this. Next thing I am in a CT scanner and up to the stroke unit.  Staff were so quick and timely. Very efficient, spoken with consultant on screen agreeing to be thrombolised which undoubtedly led to my quick recovery.

I am so appreciative of all the staff that have looked after and cared for me.  If all these services were not in place I would not have been able to get my life back and go back to my family and my nursing post.

Dear tangosb77,

Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your feedback. What a really difficult time.

I can't imagine how scary this must have been for you and your family. Amazing courage and fight you demonstrated. It's amazing to see your recovery following this traumatic incident.

It is lovely to hear about your care at all stages and I will ensure this is shared with the team.

Time is so important with stroke and it is great to hear you had rapid assessment facilitating thrombolysis. As well as all the technical aspects, equally important is care and compassion.

I hope you are continuing on your road to recovery and wish you all the best for the future.

Best Wishes,

Christine and Staff Ward 3E Acute Stroke Unit

Dear tanqosb77

Thank you for taking the time to post your Feedback here on CareOpinion. The incident you mention sounds really frightening and must have been a truly worrying time for yourself and your family.

I am pleased to read about the care and support given to you by everyone involved in looking after you. I hope you are feeling much better and on the road to recovery.

If you would like you kind comments to be passed on to the crew, I would be more than happy to arrange this for you. If you would like this to happen, please may I ask you email our feedback team at sas.feedback@nhs.scot with your name, date and location of where we attended to you. Please may I also ask you make reference to your CareOpinion user name which will allow us to link to this story.

I hope you are back to nursing post soon and perhaps back in the kayak (in due time of course)

Best Wishes

Lesley
