"Fantastic nursing and ultrasound team at Breast…"

About: University Hospital Of North Tees

I was referred to the North Tees breast clinic after a trip to urgent care raised some concerns about a large swelling/lump in my breast. I was given an appointment the following day, despite being out of my local area. The first doctor I saw was great, very transparent and concise, and I was given an ultrasound quickly. The ultrasound team (the student that conducted the test was great!) were brilliant, and very reassuring. I was under the impression I was about to be told I could leave, when a consultant and the doctor I had seen previously came into the room, and the consultant (almost aggressively) said words to the effect of I want to have a look at this myself, then followed this up with (and this is verbatim) ‘sit down and take your top off’. Whilst there was a very lovely nurse in the room, I am a 34 year old who had been in a very stressful situation, and to have two men standing in front of you, one of which had demanded I take my top off, was REALLY quite traumatic. The door to the consultation room was open when he asked this. He then started asking me (very relevant) questions in quite a forceful tone and took no notice of the other doctors interjections regarding the fact I don’t live in the area and that attending a clinic in a couple of weeks would be a huge inconvenience to me. He did not listen to anything I said. I totally understand that in order to examine me again I absolutely needed to take my top half of clothing off, no issue with that at all. But the tone and aggression and lack of professional empathy completely took me aback in an already stressful situation. I was a 34 year old (not that age is relevant here - I don’t think anyone would be happy being spoken to like that) in a room with two men. The (lovely) nurse whose facial expression and interventions (closed door then curtain, offered me a gown) said it all. As I mentioned previously, I have NO issue with the nature of the examination, you cannot examine a breast lump without clothes being removed. It was the forceful nature it was done with that is my problem. I would also question how necessary it was - I had been physically examined by the doctor prior to my ultrasound, then had to remove my clothes again for the ultrasound itself, I am unconvinced (although obviously not medically trained) that the third (and particularly intrusive) examination after the ultrasound was necessary. I must reiterate that I am beyond grateful that the hospital was able to accommodate me so swiftly and the nursing staff were great, I’m sorry I didn’t catch any names. The first doctor I saw was also great. I will be attempting to rearrange my clinic appointment not just due to reasonable travel expectations (I live in Leeds) but because I really do not want to see this consultant again.
