My uncle, who is in his 90's, was taken to ARI by ambulance with a head injury sustained as the result of a serious fall.
Covid restrictions obviously meant that I wasn't permitted to go with him.
A scan confirmed a small bleed in his brain and remarkably, despite this,my uncle was able to phone me himself to tell me this.
He was admitted for at least one night and was being transferred up to a ward, but at that point he didn't know which ward.
My complaint is that since his admission to A&E, not one member of staff has phoned me as his next of kin, to either let us know his whereabouts or to update on his condition.
The staff are relying on a frail elderly person with a serious head injury to communicate with his family.
While reassuring to hear my uncle's voice, I as a former healthcare staff member cannot believe that not one member of the staff has communicated with me since his admission.
I had to phone the records department just to find out which ward he is in.
All this on top of my uncle having to wait in the ambulance for one and a half hours outside A&E before he could be taken in following being unconscious from a head injury sustained from falling backwards onto his head on concrete.
I think this is disgraceful, and there is no excuse for the complete absence of communication with next of kin, including Covid.
"No communication"
