"Child birth"

About: Antrim Area Hospital / Delivery Suite Antrim Area Hospital / Fetal Maternal Assessment Unit Antrim Area Hospital / Ward C2 Maternity care

(as the patient),

Had a baby during the Covid Pandemic.

I was terrified and felt so alone.

My labour was extremely fast, 15 minutes in total!

I was reassured throughout by the amazing staff in Antrim Area Hospital.  I had my husband with me in the delivery suite only, the staff made this little time that we had, the most special holistic experience My life.

There were no visitors allowed, this resulted in an extremely restful time on the ward. The therapeutic level of care provided was a surprise for me, I expected to be anxious and alone but it was totally the opposite.  Patients had their curtains open, midwives stayed in the open bay with us, we engaged and laughed, and most importantly,  we rested well. This was my second baby so I have had 2 very different experiences.  I feel the second was the most beneficial for me and my baby. I was able to spend more time bonding just me and baby and more time was available to assist me with breastfeeding.  I know it seems difficult not to have visitors, but I feel in hindsight, this is what is needed for the future.

Hi Bronaghs

My name is Helen and I am the Lead Midwife at Antrim Hospital. Firstly congratulations to both you and your husband on the birth of your baby and I'm sure you are now both kept very busy as your family has increased.

Thank you for taking the time to provide such lovely feedback in relation to the care you received. I will ensure that your comments are shared with all the staff within the maternity unit as receiving such a positive compliment is really uplifting for staff and will make their day, especially during this pandemic.

It is great to read that you felt so supported by all staff and even though you had a very fast labour the experience was still special to you as a couple.

I'm glad you had the opportunity to get some rest on the ward and had the opportunity to talk with other mothers - this can be a valuable experience that is sometimes lost in this busy world we live in.

Once again I really appreciate your lovely feedback and I hope you and you family are keeping well.

Regards

Helen Weir
