"About nursing"

About: Morriston Hospital / Accident and emergency Morriston Hospital / Respiratory medicine

(as a carer),

I have lost my long time partner in morriston hospital in march 2021. he had dementia and other physical underlying health condition. Due to covid positive his health wasn't very good. He died after 9 days in hospital.

I use to call everyday 3 times. They seemed very busy which I understand. I have explained how my partner takes food or drinks. As he stopped eating at home due to covid positive. He was 86. Very positive men. Whenever I tried to ring them either nurses were busy or saying that the patient didn't want to eat or refusing food. Sometimes they told me that they are arranging dietitian to see what they can do. But to be honest with you sometimes I feel that I shouldn't have admitted him to the hospital. If I was there at least I could feed him as I use to all the time. They really should allow visitors to comfort the patients. I know hospital they can't provide all the time as we did at home. Giving him drinks or liquid food frequently.

Because he wasn't eating and underlying health condition his health deterioration was very quick and later on after 9 days he died, and by the time doctor rang me in the morning and I rush in to the hospital within 30 minutes he died. When I arrived at hospital ward s nurses told me he passed way. I couldn't have chance to see him. Which is really heartbreaking. At least they should allow to see the patients everyday for few moments.

Since he was in hospital, on 1 day I had chance to speak to the doctor. He has dementia. He was failing, weak and scared to see all the doctors and nurses to see with ppe. It was quite frightening for him to see all the staffs wearing masks and shields. No connection with family. Due to unknown faces he might scared, I understand due to covid we have to keep distance. But we should give chance to see the patients too. So that we can discuss what can we do best for the person. He didn't know what was going on, because of dementia and underlying health plus covid positive. He tested covid positive 5 weeks after he was vaccinated.
