"My disabled sister in Accident and Emergency - May 2021"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / Accident and emergency

(as a carer),

My disabled sister who has Downs Syndrome was brought into the hospital after suffering from a seizure, I have never witnessed this before. My sister was being cared for by a nurse and doctor at the time. I was understandably upset and distressed at what was happening as was my sister. I had a very nice, caring and kind student nurse take care of me while my sister was being looked after. I believe her name was Emma (she was dressed in a white and blue uniform). To say she was a student she was exceptional at providing me with care and keeping me calm, but once the nurse had left, Emma was very good with my sister, my sister's communication is limited however Emma, continued to speak to her throughout even when assisting with personal care.

My sister had another seizure and both Emma and the nurse Ralph, knew what to do and showed so much care to my sister, even when she became confused and aggressive. Emma kept her calm while the nurse tried to take extra blood samples.

I was even offered a coffee and sandwich, which was amazing as I was so hungry and cranky.

I have been to the hospital several times and never come across a student who is so attentive, kind, caring and non-judgemental. The patient next door to my sister was often loud and quite rude to the staff at times, but both Emma and Ralph calmed the patient down without shouting or being rude back to the patient.

While we were waiting to go to the ward, Emma come over and told me that a sick patient was being brought into the unit and to expect lots of doctors around and additional noise, I found this pre-alert helpful, as when the patient arrived, seeing what felt like 50 people in a small space, would have felt overwhelming, this is not something you see every day. Emma and Ralph came to check on us several times making sure we were ok. Despite the very sick patient I never felt my sister was neglected.

The whole team was very good, the doctors, nurses, student, people dressed in green all working together to look after sick and vulnerable people.

Managers you need to be proud of your team and say thank you. (maybe buy your team some biscuits) without them the system would fail.

From the bottom of my heart - thank you to each and every one of you.

Thank you so much for sharing this story. I was so pleased to read how helpful and caring you found the staff you and your sister encountered in the Emergency Department, in particular Emma the student nurse. Thank you for showing how our staff will go the extra mile to support patients and their relatives and carers during difficult times. I will share this with the team so they can see the difference their hard work makes.

With best wishes

Clare Mayfield

Matron for the Emergency Department
