"Community Midwife Care in Perth & Kinross"

About: Perth Royal Infirmary / Community Midwifery Unit

(as a service user),

I feel that the community midwife care in Tayside is poor.  They seem to do the absolute least possible and from my experience when I asked direct questions I don't get provided much information.  The best I have had is being handed a magazine on breastfeeding.  When "going through" my birth plan, I was asked about one thing, to which I requested the risks and benefits so I could make a decision.  As there were no leaflets on it that day I was told I had plenty of time to look it up myself.

After having a miscarriage a few months prior to becoming pregnant again, I did not see/speak to a midwife until 24 weeks.  That was months of anxiety, trying to have questions answered and seek reassurance over a phone line where I was constantly told "the midwives are busy today, they will call you back".  They never did call me back.  The lack of care given to those who have suffered loss and have mental health difficulties is shocking (unless you get onto a perinatal mental health pathway, then I suspect they take you seriously).

The community midwife care in Tayside from my experience is poor.

I am so sorry to hear that your experience has not been positive and that you have felt unsupported at this time.

The maternity service in Tayside has clear guidelines and pathways which aim to support your pregnancy journey from booking until your postnatal discharge. These include giving you information and advice regarding all aspects of your pregnancy, birth and infant feeding as well as prioritising time to discuss your birth preferences.

I would welcome a discussion to ensure your care meets your needs going forward.
