"Cannot get my 18 month old allergy tested?"

About: Lanarkshire Community Services / Community Maternity Care

(as a parent/guardian),

Following the birth of my daughter in 2019 she was admitted back into hospital at 2 days old with severe jaundice and an infection going through her tiny body she was hooked up to IV antibiotics and I was advised by nurses that my daughter was "starving" this raised alarm bells to me as a new mum I had been following the feeding advise from the midwifes and each community midwife visit (x3)was positive and there was never any mention of her being "starving" however whilst staying in hospital with my daughter to manage how much milk she taken and how many wet and dirty nappies we were getting was monitored over the course of a week and no issues where raised so we were allowed home.

At 6 weeks old after contious arguments with paediatric nurses that my daughter seemed to be allergic to any formula she was being given as this was coming straight back up within 15 minutes of feeding either vomit or seedy poo we were advised this was normal for a baby. I explained to them that it wasn't normal going with the NHS poo chart and that my daughter had been previously admitted to hospital with what they called "starvation" after numerous hospital trips at 3/4/5am in the morning and numerous arguments with nhs nurse's my daughter was finally given prescription milk for Cows milk and protein allergy sufferers, gaviscon and omeprazol to help with reflux. Immediately this helped my daughter she was able to keep the milk down and not be "starved" anymore the NHS were hesitant to give this milk as they advised it was £35 per tub which I advised them I would pay as my daughter needed this to survive.

Moving on now to the last 6 months my daughter has been to the hospital and doctors umpteen times with flu like symptoms ( which keeps being mistaken as covid which it is not and continous covid tests requiring to be done) weezing, coughing as if she has been a heavy smoker, runny nose, ear infections, thrush etc etc each time she is given multiple antibiotics and inhalers which DOES NOT WORK! I have asked and asked and asked to be referred to have her allergy tested which was done apparently in January 2020 but I have never had any correspondence of an appointment etc. It is now getting to the point where I am willing to go private to have this done to help my daughter. It is not fair to fill an 18 month up with medication upon medication without actually knowing what is medically wrong and each time we are told shes fit and healthy if that's the case why give her continuous medication!!!

NHS lack of knowledge around cows milk allergy and actually treating patients within our human rights has been appalling.

Dear trapperxr66

Thank you for taking the time to tell your story.

I am extremely sorry that you have had a number of concerns with the care and treatment of your daughter and would appreciate the opportunity to investigate the care received within the Paediatric Unit.

In order to do this it would be very beneficial if you could contact the patient affairs team with your concerns as this would allow children services to fully investigate on your behalf.

Please contact me at the unit if you require any assistance.

Kind Regards

Jane

Update posted by trapperxr66 (a parent/guardian)

Thank you Jane, could I have details to make contact please. As our health visitor was out on Friday and again not much help except to try the milk ladder as the Doctor and dietician are refusing to have any allergy tests done. I am also very concerned as my daughter gers gaviscon and omeprazol and this has not been managed she is still on the same dosage as she was when first given the medicine 17 months ago. Kind regards.
