"Breastfeeding support key"

About: Liverpool Womens Hospital / Maternity care

(as a service user),

I had  a preterm baby that could not feed from breast for a month but who took milk via nasal tube from day 1. I'd had an emergency c-section and with covid only my partner (male) could interact with me. Establishing breastfeeding without support would have been impossible and my success was thanks to the breastfeeding team in the neonatal unit at the Liverpool Women's Hospital and Bambis. The later were incredible with support after discharge as well.

We needed a tongue tie referral that they sorted for us and they provided and keep providing support on the nipple shield weaning process and have been instrumental to get through cluster feeding and growth spurs. They do chat, calls, video calls and online communities and without them I can honestly say we would have probably given up. Instead we are almost 4 month into breastfeeding, feeling empowered and looking forward to continue for as much as possible.

I have to say none my GP or Health Visitor really show enough knowledge enough of breastfeeding to properly advise, support and educate (despite they do it anyway...) and it has been thanks to Bambis that we have succeeded this long. I hope other women in other parts can access similar support because it is invaluable.
