"No follow up from out of hours"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Ayrshire Doctor on Call (ADOC)

(as a relative),

Received a call from my mum asking me to visit as my dad was unwell. On arriving, he was very cold and shivery with a temp of 34.7 in one ear and 35.2 in the other. Hi blood pressure was high and he was very dizzy, saying the room was spinning around him. My dad is the primary carer for my mum who has multiple health conditions and had surgery and skin grafts less than 2 weeks ago so it was important to get him better, so I called 111 for advice.

The person at Nhs24 who took my call and was really helpful, taking all the details before speaking to a nurse in the background. They advised the case would be passed on to my local centre and someone would call back within 4 hours.

Two hours later I received a call from a doctor, who I assume works for Ayrshire and Arran Urgent Care Services. The doctor asked some more questions which I answered and again reiterated my dad is the main carer for Mum but he was struggling to even walk himself due to the dizzy spells which had been getting worse over the course of the day. When they finished asking questions, I was told someone would call me back to let me know the next steps. That was at 8:30 last night and we still haven’t had a call back from anybody!

I find it unacceptable to leave a patient hanging on with no communication. As a result, dad tried his best to get mum into bed and them himself but ended up vomiting profusely. He is still struggling today and has had to reach out to his own GP for help given that he didn’t get any from out of hours last night.

I am appalled and disappointed that this has happened. My dad is a pensioner who was unwell and in need of help. I would like to know why nobody called back.
