"Social care"

About: The Ulster Hospital / Fracture Trauma Team

(as a carer),

My Mum recently received outstanding care in the Ulster Hospital following a partial hip replacement after a nasty fall. All the staff were amazing and Mum felt very motivated by their support and encouragement.

She didn't like the food though and I feel good nutrition is  essential to recovery.

Mum was assigned a   social worker who made a judgement about the care she would need outside of a hospital setting. I felt angry that a social worker would override the advice given by a Physiotherapist and an Occupational Therapist. This disappointed me and my concerns have been validated by an at home risk assessment.

I have already made an informal complaint to the Trust,in the hope of safeguarding vulnerable patients who have no family or advocate to speak for them.

Dear vanderpump99

Thank you for sharing your mum's experience.

I am sorry that there were asepcts of care (decision-making, food) that may have been better.

I will consult appropriate partners regarding your mum's experience and I will respond further to you after taking appropriate advice.

Best wishes

Conor

Update posted by Vanderpump99 (a carer)

Thank you Conor.

I had sent a thank you to the Trust via Facebook for the staff member who truly excelled when my Mum needed reassurance. It was that reply that led me here.

Positive experiences always deserve praise and recognition whilst negatives should be highlighted and addressed.

As I am occupied caring for my Mum as she recovers, I had a chat with the Line Manager of the 'professional' I had issue with. I use the word 'professional' loosely as they seem confused by their job description and qualified to disregard the guidance given to me by staff from two medical disciplines. A Care Pathway risk assessment at home four days post discharge validated my concern.

I wanted to have my say and asked the Line Manager to emphasise I was using my time to care for my Mum and protect my mental health needs otherwise my complaint would be formal.
