"Labour"

About: Maternity care (Wards 47, 48 & 50) / Labour suite maternity

(as the patient),

I gave birth at QEUH Glasgow in October 2020. Naturally I was very nervous with this being my first baby, being induced and diabetic. I am extremely grateful for the overall care I received at the hospital throughout my pregnancy.

Margaret was my diabetic nurse, she was outstanding, very warm and caring. She even followed up with me after my birth, asking about my baby too. She was so lovely. My main midwives during labour were Siobhan & Nuala, both made sure I was comfortable, kept me company chatting away throughout the process. They ensured I was calm and took the time to explain everything that was happening so I understood.

I was induced but once I was taken down to the labour suite I had to wait almost 10 hours for my labour to be started due to emergencies. Nuala sat with me through most of that time and kept me company also monitoring my baby. We chatted about our lives and she was so friendly and comforting at a time I was quite nervous and scared.

Once my labour was started it was another 12 hours until my baby was born which was eventually by c-section. Again all staff that accompanied me in the operating theatre were amazing, so welcoming putting me at ease. My surgeon was David who made the operation go extremely smooth and quick. Baby was born with no complications and we were quickly recovering on the post natal ward. My incision was very neat and healed quickly with no pain at all.

I spent another week on the post natal ward as my baby had jaundice and required treatment.   Most of the midwives on the post natal ward were so friendly and I felt in really good care. There were 2 midwives on the ward who didn’t seem as friendly, one was quite difficult when arranging visits. Only one visit was allocated per day due to Covid. My mum didn’t drive therefore arranged her visit for the same time each day and scheduled it the previous day as she left. This particular midwife seemed to make that difficult for her and was cheeky about it to me on more than one occasion. I’d like to think they were just overwhelmed with the pressure at that time and they didn’t treat all patients in that manner at an emotional time.

Overall the care I received at the hospital by the nurses, midwives, surgeons, paediatricians & obstetricians was outstanding and I can’t thank them enough for looking after me and my baby boy and bringing him into the world safely. They do truly remarkable work even more so during a pandemic!
