"Positive experience"

About: Fife Community Services / Sexual Health Whytemans Brae Hospital

(as the patient),

After my poor GP was unable to replace my contraceptive coil at the surgery, I was referred to the Sexual Health team at NHS Fife.  This was daunting, as I had just had an uncomfortable procedure (not GP's fault!!!) and knew that worse was to come at this appointment.

I saw Sue the doctor and a lovely NA (can't remember her name, sorry) who made me feel very relaxed and at ease.  Although she tried, despite various different methods, she too was unsuccessful.  I knew she would be annoyed she hadn't managed, but she never showed it or made me feel it was anything I had done.  We had a very inclusive discussion about what to do next, and a plan was made to have one more go with a different doctor, but with a fall back plan.

I met doctor Katie and NA Lynne who were again both lovely and reassuring.  After several attempts, we had success!  I was so relieved and desperate to go, but Katie took the time to make sure I understood the aftercare and long-term plan.

Everyone in the department was kind, non-judgemental and the atmosphere was professional, but welcoming - extremely important in this department as the people who use their service do so for such a wide variety of reasons, and are often reluctant to engage with healthcare services of any kind.

Dear Happy Haggis, thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience at Sexual Health. I am sorry to hear that your experience of having a coil fitted has not been without complication and discomfort, I appreciate how difficult this must have been for you and I'm pleased to hear that the outcome has been a positive one.

The sexual health team understand the various barriers that people face in accessing our service and it is important for us to try to minimise these by offering a service that is welcoming, non-judgemental and patient-centred. I am delighted to hear that you were treated with kindness and compassion by our team and were well informed and involved in decision-making relating to your care.

I will share your feedback with Sue, Katie, our NAs and the wider team and I know that they will be very pleased to receive it.

Kirsty Durham, Senior Charge Nurse Sexual Health
