"My CBT Journey for Depression"

About: Inclusion Thurrock (Talking Therapies)

(as a service user),

From the first session I had with Victor I felt listened to and each thought and feeling even things I couldnt find words for were being taken in, I felt comfortable sharing my experiences and thoughts and felt respected and that he did his best to help me and understand me.

Each session truely felt like it was tailored to me with specific points of concern being subject to a session or more with specific documents and worksheets that followed my concerns with particular thoughts or feelings. Everything I brought up was always listened to and taken seriously as we discussed how to move forward and such. I always felt like I was in charge and that it was for me and I had no issues whatsoever.

The sessions helped me discover more of how I truely felt and how to progress with that with some things being a larger impact on my depression than I first realised, and finding new ways to go about things.

The things I was given to do outside of the sessions were extremely helpful in gaining a better understanding of myself and more control over my depressive thoughts and behaviours. With the point of CBT being to use these learned skills and techniques to assist yourself in the future.

By the end I feel that I have a good understanding that I can help myself to further myself in this journey and that if I were to relapse I would have the means to help myself.

I was completely understood and the sessions were great, I had a great experience with Victor and so with the CBT I feel 100% happy with the experience and would fully recommend using this counselling as it has truely helped me.

Dear Klempy,

Thank you for sharing such a detailed story about your therapy with Victor.

It is so lovely to hear that from the very first session, you felt heard by your therapist. This is so important to us as we know that the first appointment can be daunting at times! I want to acknowledge where you said that you couldn’t find the words for everything. You were certainly not alone in feeling this way, so many clients are hesitant to start therapy as they don’t know how to put into words what is going on for them, however it sounds as though Victor did his best to help you find these words and make sense of what was going on for you at the time.

I think you sum up perfectly what therapy is all about, in that you are in charge of how your therapy goes. We view each client as being the expert in themselves, after all, you know yourself better than anyone else ever could. For this reason, is it crucial for clients to take the lead in their therapy and to guide the direction in which their therapy goes. It sounds as though you really delved into this role and used your sessions to discover more and more about the depression that you were experiencing.

I am also pleased to hear that you not only learnt more within sessions but also continued your learning outside of the weekly sessions too. As you rightly said, therapy is there to provide you with the skills and tools that you can use well beyond your therapy appointments and I have no doubts that you will continue to do this.

Overall it sounds as though you gained so much from your time with us which is absolutely fantastic to hear. You should be so proud of how much progress you have made, I know Victor will certainly be proud too.

We really do wish you the very best of luck with the future.

Take care,

Jade Ford
