"A receptionist giving (in my opinion very bad) medical advice"

About: NHS Fife / COVID-19 Vaccination Service St Andrews Community Hospital

(as a service user),

Last Wednesday, I attended St Andrews Community Hospital, Fife, to receive my second Covid Vaccine dose. After receiving my vaccination and returning to my car, my husband asked if I had been given any documentation to prove my vaccination status. As I had forgotten to ask the nurses for this, I returned to the hospital and, at this point, could only speak with the receptionist on duty. I said I wasn't not sure if they'd be able to answer this, but I was just wondering if it is possible, and if so how, to obtain proof of vaccination?

The receptionist replied that the only person who can do this is my doctor and they are far too busy to deal with requests like this.

This attitude was pretty poor, but that is not my issue. As I had said that I wanted to know if this is possible because I may need to travel for family reasons in the coming weeks - this person went on to say if I need to prove I've been vaccinated, I should just get another one when I get there.

This really threw me, and I immediately assumed that either I had misheard them or that they misunderstood the situation. We were both wearing masks and miscommunication was a distinct possibility, so I clarified by saying, just to be clear, I have just received my second dose of vaccine and, if I need to travel it will be in just a few weeks time - and your advice to me is to get another dose in another country?

They said yes, that's absolutely fine.

What???

So, I repeated myself again. And the receptionist replied, this time impatient at my surprise, that yes, I should do that. There is nothing wrong with that.

I'm pretty sure there is something wrong with that. But, hey, I'm not a doctor. But neither was this person. And I'm 100% sure that a receptionist should not be dishing out medical advice and what I take to be pretty sketchy advice at that.

I do not wish to complain about their attitude and I have really washed over some of the exchange so as to not emphasize that part of it. My issue is only with the potential danger of someone not qualified to provide information about medication doing so, potentially to the peril of someone in the future.

Hi Sick in Fife,

I'm Sorry to hear about the experience you have had. You are absolutely right that reception should not be giving out this advice and I will investigate and speak to the admin team.

Please feel free to phone me on 07583121208 to discuss further and allow me to provide any missed information you require.

Thanks
