"adenotonsillectomy"

About: Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Paediatric surgery ( Wards 3A & 3B)

(as a service user),

My 3

year old daughter had a sleep study done, this showed problems with her breathing at night, within 2 weeks of getting the results my daughter was booked in for her operation. I was very happy with how quick this was arranged. I was provided with all the information needed and a covid test arranged.
My daughter is autistic, she gets very distressed in new places.I am  thankful that she was given her own room to try to make her more comfortable, this helped a lot because she was very upset.Upon arrival all staff where helpful, everything was explained to me by the doctors & there was time to ask any questions. There was a board on the wall to write in details, what her needs are but it wasn’t filled in. I do feel it would have been helpful if this had been done rather than me having to explain to everyone that she is autistic, won’t take medication and won’t really speak.
Everyone was understanding, they didn’t try to talk to her to much and would let her wear the monitor once she fell asleep. I’m pleased with how the operation went & all the staff who helped make the stay as stress free as it could be. I’ve noticed the difference already in her sleep and her breathing.Thank you

Thank you Ljenny for sharing your experience on Care Opinion. It's so important that we receive feedback that allows our teams to reflect on both the positive and negative aspects of someone’s experience.

The timeframe that you received treatment makes me proud of the service here at the Royal Hospital for Children. Your kind words about the team members that looked after your daughter will be passed onto the staff, reassuring them of the high quality care that they give.

I'm sorry that the “what matters to me board” wasn’t completed for your daughter. I can understand why this would have been helpful to you to convey your daughters support needs to the staff looking after her and would have created a more positive experience for you both. I have shared your feedback with the ward team to gain a better understanding into why this wasn't completed on this occasion and also discussed and reinforced the importance of completing this information to help us deliver the best care to our patients and families. If you would like to reach out to me to discuss this in more detail then you can contact me on christopher.swallow@ggc.scot.nhs.uk.

Wishing you well and thank you again for taking the time to share your experience.
