An elderly relative was taken into Larkfield Unit as an an emergency earlier this year. During one year of lockdown, and with already poor mental health deteriorating rapidly, my relative became more confused and vulnerable. Throughout the year, the GP, Practice Nurse and PsychoGeriatrician did all they could to help, but were limited in the main to telephone consultations because of COVID-19. My relative had a tendency to play down symptoms and present well.
However, a very caring and competent Nurse Practitioner from the practice visited and arranged emergency care in Larkfield. There, the PsychoGeriatrician was able to assess and make a diagnosis. Each time I called the unit, staff were very supportive not only to my relative, but to me! Their advice was so helpful. The Consultant’s secretary always made me feel welcome when I called and took time to ensure nothing was missed.
Communication is vital in these situations and I am delighted to say I felt listened to and my opinion was valued, the staff at all levels kept me informed, and importantly my relative was treated with respect and involved in decision making.
