I was asked to attend urgent care by 111. I was in the worst pain I have ever felt in my entire life, which came in waves in my back and side. I had a considerable wait to see a doctor after giving a urine sample, which is understandable. When I finally saw the doctor, he shouted at me for using a hot water bottle to try and relieve the pain, shouted at me for taking paracetamol (the only pain relief I had) and then bundled me out the door with an antibiotic prescription I couldn’t fulfil til the next day, no pain relief and no real explanation of what was happening to me other than telling me my urine had a “lot of blood and infection” and I was experiencing renal colic, which was obviously confusing and frightening as I didn’t know what that was at the time. I was in tears from the pain and being shouted at and he rolled his eyes and stalked out the room without saying goodbye. I then went home with no medicine and no pain relief- the doctor maybe spent 2 minutes with me, mostly shouting at me and treating me like an idiot. I was left retching and screaming from the amount of pain when I was back at home. We called 111 again who couldn’t understand why I’d been told not to take the only painkiller I had at home, or why I wasn’t allowed to use heat to relieve the pain, or why I hadn’t been given my antibiotics at the hospital to take immediately.
I feel like the doctor didn’t take my pain seriously and never explained what was actually wrong with me- he barely examined me. I didn’t even get to sit down- I just stood there being told off like a child. I will think twice about attending again, as I felt like I wasn’t listened to and was left to suffer the worst pain of my life with no relief or reassurance as to what was wrong with me.
"Frightening and condescending"
