"An unplanned emergency stay in hospital"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Learning disability

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I am a manager of a care home supporting adults with Autism in social care service's.

One of our supported individuals required an unplanned emergency stay in hospital, as a staff team we were very aware that this sudden admission to hospital would require structure and understanding to advocate and support the individual in a way the he would be able to manage the huge change to his usual day to day routine, we made contact with the hospital's learning Disability nurse Jemma who was able to assist us with making social stories to explain treatment he would require and educating ward staff of the need to let his staff communicate with him in a way that he could process important information in regards to his health needs. She liased with social work and kept regular contact with me and my manager.

I feel that Jemma's insight and support has been invaluable and to have this service available for people with disabilities is amazing and worthwhile,  forth valley should be applauded for allowing a knowledgeable person such a Jemma to do such a fantastic job for patients and for the support she gives to care staff.

Thank you so much for your kind words. It was lovely to meet you both and I am glad this gentleman is now at home. It is very clear that the care provider is very much aware of this person's needs and together we worked fast to provide adapted information to him that minimised his distress and communicate in a way that supports his learning style.

Hospital is not an easy environment for people with learning disabilities and/or autism (especially in an emergency where no planning could happen prior to admission). This is a good example of how working collaboratively benefits people and the health outcomes they have.

I believe without this joint working and information sharing, this gentleman would have experienced a significant amount if distress. It was heart-warming to see the kindness and compassion shown by carers to support him throughout his admission. Well done.
