"The help I required as an unpaid carer"

About: General practices in Lanarkshire Lanarkshire Community Services / Occupational Therapy

(as a parent/guardian),

The help I required as an unpaid carer during the pandemic/lockdown restrictions

I have been an unpaid carer and guardian for my brother since my mother passed 7 years ago, he lives with myself and daughter.  He has LSN (global learning difficulties) with a capacity of a child of 3.8years. My daughter was also diagnosed ASD 2 years ago. I work a full time job and work hard to juggle my life but we manage.

When the country was put into lockdown March 2020, I had to work from home with facilities, resources and family support being cut off.  It was a difficult transition for my brother and daughter with changes to routines and working with them to understand the situation.  As the year continued, changes to regulations meant more changes to routines.  One day they were able to go places and then that was stopped.  This was frustrating for them and a trying time for me as it was interfering with my work.

I struggled to keep on top my workload as I was constantly required to assist them.  They had a hard time being in each others company also which would result in one or both "kicking off". It was, emotionally draining for me and I began to unwell due to the stress.  By the time the Christmas came, I felt our family situation was out of my control and I spoke with my GP. He referred me to the OT immediately and signed me off work. Within a couple of days I was discussing my situation with Sam the OT at my GPs.  She was a godsend and she talked me through all the support I would be able to get and referred me to Lanarkshire carers. I had regular phone appointments with Sam, she was always available to "off load"  my issues on to and then she would give me assurance that I was not alone.

After a few weeks of putting together care plan for myself with Lanarkshire carers, it was time to work with the OT on a return to work plan.  After some discussions, it decided that a phased return would be the most suitable way back to work.  We agreed the measures and a report was sent to my employer.  They were very happy to accommodate the phased return.  Sarah, then took over as my OT and once I was back at work, continued to contact me on a regular basis to ensure I was feeling happier, less stressed and more positive.  That life was more in control.

Dear capricornusrq54,

Many thanks for taking the time to provide feedback regarding your experience of working alongside Sam and Sara, two of our Occupational Therapists within the Primary Care Team.

I am delighted to read you felt well support during your contact with our service and were able to return to work. It's lovely to hear you are feeling more in control, happier and less impacted by stress.

I will ensure this feedback is shared with my colleagues in the Primary Care Occupational Therapy service. We always appreciate any feedback regarding our service and the support you received.

May I take this opportunity to wish you well,

Amanda
