"Horrendous from start to finish "

About: Peterborough City Hospital

My very close relative was unfortunately admitted to PCH on 2 occasions close together - 3 week stay during December 2020, where she was treated for sepsis, heart failure and pneumonia, and a 4 day stay during February 2021, when she sadly passed away as a result (I think!) Of her heart failure.

Both times she was extremely sick and we were very badly informed. Everyday, hours spent on hold battling just to get through to someone on the ward to find out even a snippet of information about her condition. Information provided was vague and misleading. No efforts were made to assist my relative (when she became well enough) in operating her mobile phone so she could connect with us. She was alone and afraid in there and as a family we were left completely helpless. A year into the pandemic, it really is shocking that better communication has not been put into place! The only time information was forthcoming was when we received the phone call to tell us that she was passing away (which actually came as quite a terrible shock to us due to not being informed properly at all previously). By the time my mother was able to see her, it was too late for my relative to even know she had anyone by her side.

I am not able to give comments on her care during either stay, as if I did my review would get published.

All in all we feel hugely let down.

I was very saddened to read your comments and on behalf of the Trust sincerely apologise for the poor communication you and your family received at this sad time for you all.

I am keen to listen to your story and if we can prevent other family members from experiencing the same problems. With that in mind if you would like to email me on bernadette.jacques1@nhs.net with your contact details or you can telephone them on 01733 676744.

Kind regards

Bernadette Jacques
