I have been receiving care from my local District Nurses for some time now following a cancer diagnosis and the need gor a syringe drive and on occasions IV Antibiotics. At no time during my care have they ever refused to attend to me due to covid restrictions. They take the relevant precautions and visit with a smile every day. They are very professional, caring and a welcome source of information and advice and support. I can honestly say I don't know how I would have coped as my GP or Practice nurses do not see patients. If you have a problem you have you talk to the reception and send photos of your condition or problem. Overall I am extremely disappointed in the lack of care by GPs with no followup or generally a lack of care and support. However this is definitely not true of the District Nurses who enquire how am every day and make contact with other health care professionals on my behalf as I need them, for example, the Palliative care nurse or the Physiotherapist. They also organised my recent admission to the Hospice. Each and every member of the District Nursing team are my hero's and they deserve more recognition than they are currently receiving. They are not permitted to refuse to see a patient because they may have covid they are going to see patients who need them. They are all fantastic and such hard workers. Professional and very caring. I hope you can appreciate that I believe they are at the heart of todays community NHS .
If there is one thing that needs reviewing when this is all over it is the role or lack of it of our GPs. They seem to have totally abdicated from their responsibilities and passed all on to District Nurses. I find this totally unacceptable. I have only total respect and admiration for District Nursing.
