"Midwife care at Ward Triage"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Maternity Care (Wards 21-24)

(as the patient),

I wanted to say thank you to the maternity team in Wishaw hospital. Everyone from the community Midwifes I seen and the hospital team were so kind and patient with me having my first baby, but there is one midwife who really made a difference.

I was asked to come to Wishaw emergency triage after phoning about my baby’s movements being less and I was seen by a midwife Clare. Just before I announced my pregnancy someone I know suffered a late miscarriage. This had an enormous effect on my mental state during pregnancy but I never mentioned it to any of the midwifes. That night in triage was the second time I’d came in with less movements. Clare did monitoring of her heartbeat and I had a scan booked but she could tell something else was going on and asked if I’d be willing to wait till we could properly chat. My daughter was moving normally. I was honestly just so stressed at the thought of losing her I didn’t know what to do.

Once she was free she made me a cup of tea and we talked, I told her the whole story and we talked through the impact this has had on me. Even phoned my husband in to discuss everything together because of how upset I was. She gave me options, talked through risks. I felt understood but also more rational. I cannot explain how much this helped but I know I am better because of it. I had requested a c-section but cancelled and instead was in the pool with most of my contractions and got out just at the end to birth my daughter.

I am so very great full for the care and understanding shown that night by Clare and know it has made a huge difference to my health and future relationship with my daughter. Thank you.
