ASD - TalkAbility (Hanen Program)

(as a parent/guardian),

I was informed that my 5 years old son (who has got ASD and attends P1) and I will have to wait until the end of the year to attend Talk Ability Program. He really needs help to communicate appropriately with his peers. In other countries Talkability can be delivered through Telepractice but for some reason this is not in place in the U.K. and they only deliver TalkAbility in person. Parents who have kids with autism are desperate to be taught strategies that help their children to communicate and reach their full potential. 

It is completely unacceptable someone to have wait for 9 months or a year to attend such a crucial program. 

I had to buy the TalkAbility book (which costs £48 by the way..) so I get some ideas from it hopefully. 

Unfortunately I will have to wait for months until I will be called to attend the seminar when it is available.

Hello FPE

I totally understand how frustrating it must be to be told that you will have to wait so long to attend a Talkability Course. My understanding is that the team has been working hard to find a way to delivery Talkability remotely and that we are now able to do so.

I would urge you to contact your speech and language therapist again to see if there is any scope for you to join a course more quickly. Contact details for all of the Children and Young People's Speech and Language Therapy Teams are available on the Let's Talk website www.lets-talk.scot.nhs.uk in case you need them.
