"Security"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow

(as a service user),

I feel that the security staff at the QEUH sometimes act more like bouncers at a night club. I found them to be intimidating to patients rather than understanding the people visiting are patients with health problems and possibly real worries, so need a kind welcome face when they arrive and a feeling that are safe rather than harassed.

Dear tigergm88

Thank you so much for taking the time to post your thoughts on Care Opinion about the security personnel that you encountered whilst attending the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

Firstly, I would like to apologise if you perceived front door security colleagues to be intimidating to patients. Your experience has been shared with the Security Manager who manages colleagues on site and he has also shared his disappointment that front door security colleagues were perceived in that manner, and has provided an extensive summary of the recruitment process that is undertaken to ensure that all personnel have the following attributes:

Able to demonstrate 5 year full work history; Holds a valid Security Industry Authority (SIA) Licence, which he personally checks to ensure all is valid; Excellent customer services deliverables which remain consistent over the full course of a shift; Can meet NHSGGC customer and client expectations – which at this point includes checking ID badges of staff and appointment letters for patients and visitors; reminding people to wear a face covering and to sanitise their hands on arrival; to ensure that the restrictions that are in place for entering a hospital environment are adhered to.

The Security Manager was keen to communicate that the ‘bouncer’ approach is not conducive of the employment style that is undertaken for the reason that you have stated: no one arriving at our site should ever feel harassed, and should always feel supported.

If you would like to discuss your experience further, please contact aly.thomson@ggc.scot.nhs.uk.

If you have cause to be attending the site again whilst visiting restrictions are in place (I.e. front door security colleagues are present), please share your experience with us. Likewise, if you would like to discuss your previous experience further, please contact Aly.Thomson@ggc.scot.nhs.uk.

Thank you once again for sharing your experience.

Kind Regards

Mandy Machell
